Caroline was the Auditor General for Scotland from 2012 to 2020, during a period of significant growth in Scotland’s financial powers.

She is a lay member of the Court of the University of Edinburgh, a member of the Board of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and a non-executive director of Public Sector Audit Appointments Ltd. She is a member of the expert panel supporting the Independent Review of Adult Social Care and a Trustee of the International Futures Forum.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA).
